Mac OS X Tiger
I just learned from Michael Hanscom about:
a preview of Mac OS X 10.4, AKA Tiger. Wow — lots of yummylicious geek-flavored goodies in there. Most interesting to me are the metadata-centric search capabilities and Safari's built-in RSS aggregator (which looks quite impressive). I'd be more excited about iChat's conferencing capabilities, but I've got so few people on my iChat list with iSights that I have no clue if I'd ever have a chance to use it.
Well, I have no idea what "metadata-centric search capabilities" are, but I am sure interested in the browser's built-in RSS aggregator (now that I know what that is, something new for me in the past two months), and also in the iChat conferencing capabilities...I hope my brother in France will eventually get an iSight and we can talk with my mom in Virginia at the same time. Maybe my other brother in New Jersey could get a mac AND an iSight, and then we could have frequent audio-visual reunions...but even audio would be great, which we could do without the iSight, I would think... nice to think about, anyway.

(laughs) I'm something of a metadata geek (evidence here [ http://www.michaelhanscom.com/eclecticism/2003/10/metadata_is_a_g.html ] and here [ http://www.michaelhanscom.com/eclecticism/2004/01/madacy_metadata.html ], for instance), so that part of the sneak preview excited me.
Metadata is basically information about information for instance, for a Word document the metadata includes the author, when the document was created, when it was last edited, and so on; in iTunes, the metadata is the artist, composer, year of release, etc.
Being able to search on metadata can be very powerful. For instance, since I do my best to make sure all of my songs in iTunes have the composer field filled out, I can do a search in iTunes for songs that include 'bob dylan' in the composer field but not in the artist field, and I've instantly got a list of every song in my collection that is a cover of a Bob Dylan song.
Expanding that into the entire system, then, causes my geek tendencies to go into full-fledged drool mode. :)
