Netflix Ad

Julie Leung's post from July 5th, "How We Saw Spidey" talked about how she and her husband watched the movie.

I realized, after watching Spidey from our sofa, that I like movies. If I can see them at home in a relaxing fashion it's fun. In recent times an excursion to the cinema had required as much effort as an excursion to the Siberia. That's a slight exaggeration.

[...]

And if we can select what we want to watch ourselves, choose how and when we see it, snuggle on our own sofa together...I'm starting to like movies more and more...

What I have to say to that is: Netflix.com is definitely the way to go for us. Three movies at home at a time: 1 for the kids, 1 for parents, and 1 for the whole family. The DVDs sit around until we feel like watching one, then we see it and return it...and try to manage the online list of possible movies so we next get an appropriate kind to refill the available movies in the house. Sometimes we watch several in fairly rapid succession, sometimes we don't watch one for 3 weeks, but they're always on hand for that occasion.

My brother, my mother, and my mother-in-law all use netflix too, so we refer each other to good movies we've seen (like Tortilla Soup, which my mother-in-law recommended to us and I recently mentioned to my brother and mom). I think my love of movies runs in the family. Sometimes my mom would bring home 5 videos for the weekend from the only English-language bookstore in our city, ELM (English Language Media in Geneva - wow, I was shocked to discover it's still there, though why it should disappear just because I moved away, I don't know).

The kids enjoy Netflix offerings such as National Geographic documentaries and Veggietales and some older classic Disney. The adults get the action movies (recently resaw The Terminator, wow, 20 years old now, and at last Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - we liked it) and the romantic comedies and the old classic black & whites...It is definitely much easier to watch a movie at home on our laptop cuddled in bed with headphones on after the kids are asleep (and much cheaper!), than to get out to the movies. Plus this way we don't have to sit in dirty seats and watch all the yucky previews and wait in line and be in crowds or be on time. The small screen doesn't bother us at all. And if nature calls - well, just lightly press the space bar and don't miss a second!

Thanks. Yes, we're thinking about Netflix. I didn't realize though that they had National Geographic videos available too. It is fun to watch at home, although I do like the cinema too...the thrill of the escape :-)

K., we are netflix fans over here too. And we do the same thing, sometimes 3 weeks go by.

We also just saw Crouching Tiger.., we had seen in in the movie theater years ago, so it was a treat to see again. It was fun to watch a movie that is NOT American. Not a happily ever after movie at all, but the cinmatography is amazing, and a great story line.

We don't go to movies much anymore. Though it can be an occasional treat to do so.

Helen, I remember we saw it with you guys!
...And Netflix rules.

I agree that Netflix rules! We don't have cable, so Netflix is our only TV. We like to get seasons of shows. Our favorites are X-files and the Simpsons. I'm also becoming partial to the Sopranos.

We have thought about ditching cable. We only get the basic channels -- but we don't even watch those, only Netflix.
