We Got 'Im
Hopefully there will be no more of this:
Each of the numerous times that I awoke last night, I nervously checked the clock to see whether our intruder might reasonably have been caught yet. I didn't want to disturb him in the act and let him be frightened away. I wanted to nab him. At the same time, I constantly shivered at the thought of being successful in our little mission. I had at least two separate dreams about the rodent being caught. In the first, David had gone down ahead of me and put the trapped rat in a shoebox covered with two brown lunchbags, and then left it precariously balanced on the edge of the sink for me to admire! In the second, there were two animals, one live mouse and one dead rat. I won't go into any of the gruesome details of that story.
At 5:45am I finally deemed it late enough for noctural animals to be done with their prowling, and ventured timidly into the kitchen.
GOT HIM!
Simply put, these work exactly as billed.
This was our first experience with a rodent in the house. I have nothing against mice or rats outside, or in a cage on purpose, but when one of unknown lineage dares to party uninvited in my pantry, that's crossing the line. If it happens again, we now know what to do. Or perhaps I should say David knows what to do. Although it was I who selected, bought, and observed the trap, he is the one who mixed the final feast, applied the sticky treat to the trap, set it, and threw the prize out in the morning. He doesn't see why I am sparing you the photo he took before disposal...

I don't know it it's appropriate to congratulate someone on catching a mouse in their house, but let me just say I am thankful that you caught it; that you did not post the picture on your blog; and that the Ghirardelli chocolate in your home will continue to please your family (and guests!) instead of unwelcome and unworthy visitors like rodents.

Photo! We want the photo!

At least reveal whether it was a mouse or rat.
Chances are that if you have one you have more than one. Try to find the hole your guest came in through. It doesn't take much. If you find it, you can stuff it full of steel wool to block it.

I am no expert in rodents...but we think it was a rat. At least it chose the rat trap rather than the mouse trap to get stuck in. Perhaps a "roof rat"? Do you have any suggestions for how to figure out where it came in? I'm not sure how to do that. Thanks for the steel wool tip. Sounds like you have dealt with this before?
I really don't want a photo of a dead rat on my blog, but I emailed it to Jon, so maybe he'd like to have it on his ;-)

So you think it was really a rat, eh? Ours was definitely a (Christmas) mouse, a sweet petite little thing, when dead, that is. A rat does not seem nearly so "sweet" nor inoffensive. Oh well, it is gone now, and your chocolate is safe, for the moment. I do not really want to see the picture of it, but it would be interesting to know if it was a rat or a mouse. Rats really do have a negative connotation, as is "ratting" on someone. "What are you, a man or a mouse" points out another category as does the vision of "Mighty Mouse", for example. While I have never heard of "Mighty Rat", I have heard of Super Rat, which is also a negative connotation in my book. Enough about the rodent population. I did enjoy some Swiss milk chocolate with almonds tonight, but I did not share it with a single furry friend or foe.

Mices is pretty tiny, nothing like a handful.
We lived in a house that would have been falling down if it hadn't been made of concrete block that was up against a north-facing hillside here in soggy Seattleville. It was slowly rotting away from the inside out, and there were lots of places for the varmints to get in. I don't remember how many mice we killed, but it was a lot.
Best book on pest control: _Tiny Game Hunting_ "Environmentally Healthy Ways to Trap and Kill the Pests in Your House and Garden" by Hilary Dole Klein and Adrian M. Wenner. Extremely entertaining reading, and all sorts of fun craft projects for building your own traps and barriers. Every house should have a copy.

Love to eat them mouses,
mouses is what I love to eat.
Bite they little heads off,
nibble on they tiny feet!
Sorry, I couldn't resist quoting one of my favorite B. Kliban cartoons. We recently had an invasion that drove our poor little terrier bonkers. She could smell them and tried hard to find them, but in the end it was victorpest that was victorious. We also caught two on the same night using Winco gourmet peanut-butter, btw.
