Go

GochopsticksDavid and I were trying to teach ourselves the game Go yesterday afternoon. Apparently there are two important things to know about Go:

1. It's not fast; and
2. It's not easy.

After trying it, we agree.

To make the game a little faster and easier for beginners such as ourselves, we made the game board a quarter of the size. How do you like our fancy chopstick borders?

I have to say that my impression of the game is that I would (almost?) rather play chess (to which I am fairly resistant), but I would far prefer to go horse back riding. Or if it has to be something on a Go board, I actually love playing Go-Moku, which is "Five in a Row."

David liked the introduction to Go. Maybe Jason will learn to play with him.

I'm no good at Go either, but on the other hand since yesterday was my first game, I'm not yet worried about that fact :-)

Most of my instruction has come from these sites: http://www.telgo.com, http://playgo.to/interactive, and oddly enough http://www.sentex.net/~mmcadams/teachgo/index.html which is funny since that one is teaching people how to teach people Go!

Also found a good Palm OS app, AIGO (http://www001.upp.so-net.ne.jp/iizuka) as an opponent, which usually beats me soundly, but it's still great practice. :-)

The story of how your dad bought our fancy, authentic Go board at Harrod's in London is a fun tale, and his most famous success at bargaining, which I shall tell you when next we talk!
