British Mother's Day and Mine

MinidaffodilsMother's Day in England is next Sunday, June March 18th. Not only am I not taking the U.S. Mother's Day (too close to my birthday, it would sap the strength of my troops), I decided to rearrange the schedule of the British one as well, and take it today, 8 days early (as the 18th will be quite busy and require getting up and out early).

Today we had nothing on our plates, so everything was relaxed enough to accomplish a breakfast in bed for mom (with something on the plate). Complete with a mini daffodil in a tiny vase. But did we have an English breakfast? Noooo...no fried mushrooms or baked tomatoes or beans for me. I'm a French breakfast girl all the way - croissants and pains au chocolat and hot chocolate, baby.

Then I was finally, at long last, able to finish my 668-page book (Eldest) and catch up with the rest of the family in the Christopher Paolini department. I enjoyed both Eragon and the sequel, and look forward to reading the finale in the trilogy whenever it comes out (never mind that the plot is Lord of the Rings mixed with Star Wars, warmed over - doesn't bother me, I loved both of those enough). It also makes me want to see the Eragon movie, even though most of what I've heard about it has been fairly discouraging. Not enough to discourage this movie-loving fan. It apparently comes out on DVD in 10 days in the U.S. but not until mid-April here.

ApplepiebubblingThis afternoon I baked an apple pie with deliciously tasty Granny Smith apples - I was tempted just to eat them raw, and sneaked a few crunches to the kids and my own tongue. David had already brushed his teeth from lunch. Can you smell the bubbling, spicy liquid as it came out of the oven? No, I didn't seal the edges of the crust too well.

It's maybe the sixth day in a row of sunshine. We are basking in it. Also, although her cough lingers, Emily's fever broke last night and she had a great night's rest, awakening perky and cheerful. Thank You, Father, for answering our prayers once again and caring for us.

While I'm on the topic of events taking place at different junctures in the U.S. and U.K., here in England we don't do the daylight savings thing until two weeks from now (please take note, grandparents who might call us...).

Ahem. You must be spring dreaming. Here in the states, it's March, not June. ;)

That said, our temps are finally in the 40s here and my kids and the neighbor kids are in t-shirts, shorts, and wellies. Thaw is everywhere.

Clever way to get comments, changing the month. Now, we have to change our time tonight, by order of the President, no less.

Oops, thanks, Heidi and Martin. I think I was dreaming, Heidi - today is the 7th straight day of sunshine, so I guess I was transported on the sunbeams directly to June. Fixed now!

We went and saw Eragon in the theater over Christmas break. While not the best movie we had ever seen, we all enjoyed it pretty well. Brian and Ben read the book together, though several years before, and of course it was much more detailed than the movie. Still, I'd say it's worth a cozy evening on the couch together!

I liked Eragon-the-movie well enough - Jeremy Irons is wonderful in it. I've got a few quibbles (the biggest one being why the Elf doesn't look Elvish...) but over all, I enjoyed it.
